Why a butt plug is better than a bar of soap for your anus
Posted by D.VICE Sexpert onDuring the Covid 19 lock down in New Zealand, there has been a focus on ensuring that essential services…particularly hospitals are freed up to deal with the potential virus outbreak. Something we all know and understand.. A common reason for people to present at Accident and Emergency at hospitals around New Zealand is due to accidents involving items lost up their anus. A bar of soap is more valuable for washing your hands than sticking up you bum.
This may sound funny but is potentially quite dangerous. The anatomy of the anus and rectum means that there is no real stopping point and objects can end up in the lower intestine – to be removed surgically. In addition the lining of the rectum can be perforated by sharp objects.
Unlike the vagina which has a stopping point at the cervix (and even when the cervix has been removed the vagina is essential like the foot of a sock and is pretty much closed off), the rectum leading to the anus (bum hole) is a continuation of the bowel and intestine.
Items inserted into the anus tend to be pulled in rather than pushed out, if they have no flared base to remain outside the bottom, can easily become an embarrassing problem.
A quality butt plug is designed for safe anal play. The base should be flared and a good size wider than the shaft or body of the toy.
Butt Plugs should always be made from non-porous materials such as medical grade silicone or shatter proof glass and be easy to clean using no more than hot soap and water.
The anus can carry harmful bacteria in faeces (poo). This can be easily managed with good hygiene practises such as thorough washing hands and anal toys and using a lubricant to ensure easy insertion and extraction of the toy.
Consensual Anal stimulation can be very enjoyable for people of all gender and sexual identities. Anal sex can be technically more challenging than other forms of penetration and time, lube and arousal can make the experience a whole lot more pleasurable.
To make your anal exploration safe and enjoyable;
- Only insert a toy designed for anal play
- Always use lube and plenty of it
- Maintain good hygiene, wash you anal toy after use each time (we do not recommend toy cleaners as these are chemicals and can irritate genital areas)
- Take time and stop if you experience pain or discomfort…these are not good signs…try again another time rather than persevere with pain.
